Declaration of Independence
The first founding document
The Declaration of Independence, based on the Biblical inspiration of our founding fathers, was the first of our founding documents that separated the colonies from England. But this instrument is so much more than a legal document designed to separate our new country from England. It created a covenant between the American people and God.
Our founders knew that man’s rights were a gift from God and not the government. They recognized this and wanted future generations to know that their rights cannot be taken away by anyone other than God, which is memorialized in the document:
that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
They entered into a covenant with God for His guidance to ensure that their actions were righteous and to rely on Him for His divine protection. They were not going to take these great steps without God. This was made clear in the wording:
to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions.
They are asking God that their intentions be righteous. They wanted to be sure that what they were about to start would have God’s support. Then in the final paragraph of this magnificent document it states their expectation of protection:
And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence,
In this final paragraph, our founders were telling God that they are relying on him for everything, including protection from their enemies. Note the wording of “firm reliance.” They relied firmly and entirely on God.
It goes on to say:
we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our Sacred Honor.
It did not say honor; it said Sacred Honor, which means dedicated to God. With God as their Judge, they were inseparable from Him and therefore successful in all areas of their lives.
As a result, our founders were victorious in all that they sought from God. History has shown us, and historians have documented that the British Army was superior to the Americans’; yet America prevailed. In looking at the revolution, you cannot miss the hand of God helping America win the war against the British. Whether it was the weather that assisted George Washington on Long Island and at the Battle of Trenton or the miraculous discovery of Benedict Arnold’s treason at West Point, there is no doubt of His intervention in that war.
In 1981, Marshall Foster and Mary-Elaine Swanson authored The American Covenant. In that book they state,
If there is to be a real American renewal, it will have to begin through a repentant reaffirmation of our American Covenant. God blessed our fathers because they covenanted, agreed contracted with God to obey His Son (Psalm 2:10). God has not changed His purpose for America but we, as Americans, have forgotten our covenant, our response to His purpose…The real hope of America is in the return of God’s people to their corporate as well as individual covenant with their God.
It’s not up to one or two people; it’s up to all of us as Americans. We have to make the decision as a country that God is sovereign not only over our lives, but also over our entire country. Each of us has to willingly decide to reaffirm our covenant with God that was created by our founders and He will hear our cry and deliver us.

The call to Restore America’s Foundation has been ignored for more than one hundred years, which is far too long. We have allowed politicians, activists, and rogue courts to remove God from our schools, agencies, and the public square. Look at what is being taught in many schools today. It’s unbelievable. We need to reverse all of this and the only way to accomplish that task is through prayer and education.
